City on the Hill
in the corner of the room
in the gloom he counts his money
mr marvelous tonight
he's doing alright
in his pocketbook he has
his very favourite photograph
it's the Vegas sky at night
and isn't it bright
gonna buy myself a house
in the middle of the woods
gonna buy myself some woods
in the middle of the new world
in the middle of Oz
picture yourself in the city on the hill
where no wolves and no rattlesnakes dance
mosquitoes and others are left to their brothers
and you hold the gold in your hands
we can burn the house down too
if it means that much to you
we can drown the highways in the sound of rain
we can smoke a cigarette
we can make a bet for peace
but i do not think that peace is what we'll get
in his solitary night
all his military might
won't do nothing for the light of the moon
he knew peace when he believed
he knew sorrow when he grieved
what did he know when he received
the message of a new world
