Friend I Never Had
thought i ought to let you know
there was so much i had left to say
and though i know you had to go away
oh well, maybe another day
i keep returning in my mind
to that night i saw you standing there
with your helium balloons in hand
i knew you were gonna get away
still i had to search for clues
in every subtle twist of circumstance
and maybe when i heard the news
i knew that all my hopes and fears had fallen down
and lay in pieces on the ground
and nothing i could every do would ever get it back to you
you were the friend i never had
we really could have had a blast
why did you have to fall so fast
it's too soon to lose
in the rising sun revue
the heroes always make it through somehow
bravely we shall walk along until we find
that glorious impermanence offers little recompense
and nothing we could ever do would ever get it back to you
i heard the poet speak of this
shiny trick of metamorphosis
bright red pepper dragonfly
oh well, oh my, guess i have to figure out
what it is they talk about
and maybe then i'll finally see
the beauty that is gravity
