Having been through many carnations as a dancer, from
Babylonia up until
A review by Zoe Infinity
today, I did not think I would live long enough to find the troubadour who
has followed me through those many lives.
I was wrong, because Gregory Morris is that troubadour.
His untitled disc recorded live in June 2001 is luscious pleasure for
anyone who dances, likes well-crafted songs, or story telling. Mr. Morris
put together a delightful collection of stories set to music that is as
pleasing to the ears as it is to a dancer's feet.
European, Bohemian, and delta blues influences are woven through each
track. A simple, yet complex disc, just Gregory and his guitar. However,
with Gregory, what more do you need?
Baylight Lullaby is a windswept song, with Gregory's Spanish influenced
guitar sending you to a tropical island where women in full, colorful
dresses dance barefoot on the white sand beaches, the south sea breezes
carrying their laughter to the stars above them.
Everlasting Smile reminds me that we all have to deal with our mortal coil
and no matter what weighs us down, use what gifts we have, and continue
our struggle through the life we were meant to live. Thanks Greg.
Houses In The Sky, I have to admit, this is one of my favorites. I
identify with the lyrics. Some would say that inspiration is a demon with
very harsh demands....Dress yourself in robes of madness and I will put
magic in your hands..... So very true, it was if Greg crawled inside my
head and saw the darkness and light that swirls within it.
Midsummer Chandelier is an instrumental, guitar. A delicate song with
bursts of energy, a song that would have been played in the court of a
Renaissance king or queen. Silks flowing and jewels sparkling under the
candles of the chandelier, as the ladies and gentleman dance the night
away.
Jennifer The Renegade is a delightful ballad about a daughter of the
gypsies, a renegade from a winter storm.....
Fortunes Flame, a touch of the blues, which is fitting, because he's
seeking his fortune in New Orleans and there he finds a mysterious and
beautiful woman who bewitches him. Elusive she may be, however, I think
he will keep her, ma chre New Orleans.
Moorish Courtyard, another guitar solo, and the title IS the song. When I
hear this song, I imagine myself in an ancient Moorish castle, dancing
beside the fountains, on worn cobblestones with my fan held high, veils
swirling and my heels keeping time. Yes....I am there.
Shiny Old Soul.....uptight...holier than thou..... No, not me, I have an
old soul and it truly shines when I dance to this one. See me smile?
Bottle Green Waters a song with a staccato melody, so easy for his dancer
to perform her whirling magic. A song of desire for his dancer, I hope
she comes for him soon.
Two Pistols For The Low Road has an interesting tidbit of info about the
creation of the song, it is the only song with an overdub, and as Gregory
said, Hence the second pistol!. Another wonderful intrumental, which I
truly believe was inspired by the fine roots music of Appalachia. Is that
a mandolin and fiddle darlin'?
Fire To Fog a very fine track, which closes this most interesting and
enchanting CD. Another ballad, sung with the fire Gregory holds within
his spirit. ..You're going to be so good to me, I'm going to be so good
to you....You're going to be so bad to me, I'm going to be so bad to
you.... Sorry Gregory, the only "bad" you can do to me is play until I
dance into the astral plane of ecstasy.
If you enjoy storytellers and someone who has an eerie link with the past
and perhaps you; then Gregory Morris is certainly someone you don't want
to miss. Not only is he an accomplished musician and an extraordinary
lyricist, he's also one of the most charismatic and insightful people who
has entered my life, and I pray he stays for a few more clicks of the
wheel, before once again, my troubadour disappears into the mists of time
eternal.
At this time, Gregory is playing Cody's every Thursday. The show is free
and so is the joy you'll take home with you.
Gregory would like to extend his thanks to engineer Troy Davis with
Digissance Studios, who helped put together this particular CD.
